Bob Spiegel

You promised her it would stop. You have probably promised yourself more times than you can count. It hasn’t stopped.

Bob Spiegel knows that cycle from the inside. He lived in it for decades. Today he coaches men at Root to Bloom Therapy and Coaching as they get free from compulsive sexual behavior and do the slow, honest work of rebuilding trust with the wife they hurt. In Joel 2:25, God promises to restore the years the locusts have eaten. Bob and Connie’s marriage is a living picture of that promise, and it did not come cheap.

“There is hope and healing for all of us. The fight for redemption and reconciliation is worth fighting, for you and for her. You’re both worth it.”

My Story

My addiction to sexual behavior began when I was eight years old. It went on for decades, and it put my wife, Connie, through hell. At one point I went to her and said she had to divorce me. I couldn’t stop acting out, and I didn’t know how to get well. We divorced later that year, and our family came apart.

I made some sincere attempts to get free on my own, without any therapeutic help. Connie saw changes. By God’s grace, we remarried three years later. I wish I could tell you life was wonderful after that. It wasn’t. Four years later I was acting out again, and she was devastated.

That time, Connie set specific boundaries so she could feel safe in our marriage. Now the choice was mine. Her boundaries are what finally put me on a serious road to recovery. One of them was that I find a counselor. After a lot of research, I called Jason Martinkus with Redemptive Living. He explained why I did what I did and how to stop. That was the start of my recovery. For the first time in decades, I got sober and stayed sober.

That is when my relational recovery with Connie began. I had to learn emotions, mine and hers. Staying present was hard. When she needed answers about how I could hurt her that way, my instinct was to retreat into survival mode, and I had to stop doing that.

Helping her heal meant being humble and honest with her, and being vulnerable when everything in me wanted to hide. I learned empathy. I grieved the pain and devastation I caused and the betrayal trauma I put her through. What I was really learning was how to help her trust the man who had destroyed her world. It was not smooth for either of us.

If my story can be a picture of redemption for you, it would be my honor to share it with you.

How I Work

An Approach Built From Lived Experience

My heart is to help men get free from compulsive, destructive sexual behavior and learn to build real emotional intimacy with their wives after betrayal.

As a relational recovery coach, I work with men one-on-one, lead a men’s group, and coach couples. I also prepare men for therapeutic disclosure and help facilitate disclosures and intensives. Connie and I work with couples together using Dr. Jake Porter’s Couple-Centered Recovery Model.

If you are a wife reading this for your husband, I understand why you are here. You can’t do his recovery for him. You can send him this page.

Background

Before this work, my life was the military and business. I graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and served as a Combat Engineer Platoon Leader, Executive Officer, and Company Commander. After the Army, I owned and ran a 180-person commercial excavation, mining, and transportation company for forty years.

That background shows up in how I coach. I know what accountability looks like, and I know how to lead men. I also know that none of it kept me sober. Recovery did.
